Beth Szescila is a double certified member of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), being certified in fine art, as well as in antiques and residential contents. She has been the lead instructor for the ISA's Antiques and Residential Contents Specialty Course 201, taught nationwide, and taught "Appraisal Tips for the Savvy Collector" at Rice University. Beth was a member of the ISA Board of Directors for five years, serving as both the corporate vice president and corporate secretary. She is the past national chair of the Antiques and Residential Contents Committee and received the Outstanding Member of the Year award at the national conference in 1998. Ms. Szescila served as president of the board of directors of the Foundation for Appraisal Education, a not-for-profit organization formed to promote the advancement of education related to personal property appraising.

Ms. Szescila received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Mississippi and worked for years in the field of art, both as a commercial artist and teacher. She has been a serious collector of antiques and fine art for many years and was an antique dealer for 10 years before becoming a full-time appraiser. She was a contributing editor of the reference book "Antiques for Dummies" and has been a feature writer for "ANTIQUES ROADSHOW Insider." Beth is the owner of Szescila Appraisal Service, located in Houston, Texas. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer around the country. She has been an appraiser on ANTIQUES ROADSHOW since its first season, having worked in several areas including Rugs & Textiles, Decorative Arts, Collectibles, Folk Art, and Glass. Ms. Szescila retired from appraising at the end of 2012 but continues to broker fine and decorative arts.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is an antiques appraisal event and television production; we do not buy or sell objects, and conducting any business with an appraiser at the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW event is strictly forbidden.

If you decide to do business with an appraiser who has appeared on ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, please keep in mind these tips before consigning or selling an item:

  • Get more than one referral and check references
  • Get valuations of your item from more than once source
  • Compare options between different types of sellers, i.e., a dealer versus an auction house
  • If you are considering consigning an object for auction, be sure to inquire how the item will be priced, the size of the fee, and the expected amount of time the process may take. Find out what will happen if it doesn't sell.
  • Check the appraiser's professional associations (such as International Society of Appraisers, American Appraisers Association, National Auctioneers Association)
  • Consult an attorney before signing a contract
  • Whatever kind of transaction you decide to enter into, always get a detailed written receipt for your records

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW’s pool of experts are professionals with a wide range of experience in the antiques, fine art and collectibles community, and they are from a diverse background of auctioneers, dealers and appraisers.

All ROADSHOW appraisers are independent volunteers who donate their time and expertise to PBS and who pay their own expenses to be on the show. All business transactions are independent from ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.
